Ribbon Sapele Quartered

Ribbon Sapele Quartered veneer presents one of the most visually commanding grain patterns available in the world of architectural woodworking. This sample displays the species' hallmark interlocked grain, which — when quartersawn and sliced — produces the dramatic ribbon stripe effect clearly visible running vertically through the panel. The alternating bands shift between a warm, burnished copper-salmon and deeper reddish-mahogany tones, with lighter cream-gold highlights catching along the ribbon's reflective faces. The surface carries a fine, consistent texture with subtle luster that rewards both natural and artificial lighting equally. The quartersawing method used to produce this veneer is critical to achieving the ribbon effect on display here. As the blade moves perpendicular to the growth rings, the interlocked grain fibers alternately reflect and absorb light, creating those characteristic parallel stripes that appear almost to shift and shimmer as viewing angles change. This optical phenomenon, known as chatoyance, gives Ribbon Sapele its prized status among designers specifying statement wall panels, executive office millwork, hotel lobby cladding, and high-end residential cabinetry and furniture faces. At Rosebud Veneer and Plywood in Louisville, Kentucky, our three decades of architectural veneer expertise mean we understand how to help designers and builders source, match, and sequence Ribbon Sapele panels for maximum visual continuity and impact. Whether you are clad an entire boardroom wall in book-matched panels or integrating this material into custom casework, our team can guide sequence selection from the flitch to ensure the ribbon pattern flows with architectural intention across every surface.

WorkabilitySapele can be troublesome to work in some machining operations, (i.e., planing, routing, etc.), resulting in tearout due to its interlocked grain. It will also react when put into direct contact with iron, becoming discolored and stained. Sapele has a slight blunting effect on cutters, but it turns, glues, and finishes well.
AvailabilityShould be moderately priced for regular plainsawn or quartersawn lumber, though figured lumber and veneer can be extremely expensive, particularly pommele or quilted Sapele.
Special NoteBest-of-both-worlds cut. Structural stability of a quarter-cut ribbon with the exotic flair of pommele. Exceptionally easy to sequence for long corridors.
Grain TextureDark red with ribbon stripe figure and curl. Grain is interlocked, and sometimes wavy. Fine uniform texture and good natural luster.
CharacteristicsHeartwood is a golden to dark reddish brown. Color tends to darken with age. Besides the common ribbon pattern seen on quartersawn boards, Sapele is also known for a wide variety of other figured grain patterns, such as: pommele, quilted, mottled, wavy, beeswing, and fiddleback.
